Hey Laurie, I'm currently feeling really stressed out because of my upcoming exams. I feel like I'm not doing enough while simultaniously feeling that I can't do any more studying. Do you have any tips on how to survive exams (or any stressful situation for that matter) without experiencing a mental breakdown whenever you're letting your mind wander?

This is EXACTLY what I feel like on deadline for a book. It sucks, but I know how to fix it.

The most important thing you can do for yourself is to go for a long walk and then get a good night’s sleep. No caffeine, no drugs or booze - just sleep (after getting some fresh air). To push your brain past the point of exhaustion makes no sense, because it needs sleep in order to work at all. Emotional reactions are hideously magnified when you are not getting enough sleep.

Auntie Laurie’s recommendation: Walk two miles, drink herbal tea, shut down all the screens and crawl into a cozy bed to sleep. When you wake up, you’ll be invincible!!

At least, you will be OK, I promise.

PS - Write me when you wake up.

Auntie Laurie
